NASHVILLE, TN - At the request of 20th Judicial District Attorney General Glenn Funk, TBI special agents are investigating the circumstances leading to a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred Monday evening in Davidson County.
Preliminary information indicates that Monday night, officers with the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department were dispatched to a home in the 2900 block of Split Oak Road in Antioch, on a report of an altercation that resulted in one man holding another person in the home hostage.
Reports from the scene indicate that responding officers entered the home and attempted to speak to the subject through a door for a period of time. When they heard screaming inside, they entered the room and encountered the subject with a large knife, coming toward them. During that confrontation, one officer fired at the subject, identified as Joshua Kersey (DOB 11/28/1992), striking and killing him. No officers were injured during the incident.
At this time, this investigation remains active and ongoing.
TBI agents are working to independently determine the series of events leading to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews. Throughout the process, investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General for his further review and consideration. The TBI acts solely as fact-finders in its cases and does not determine whether the actions of an officer were justified in these types of matters. That decision rests with the District Attorney General requesting TBI’s Involvement.
The TBI does not identify the officers involved in these types of incidents and instead refers questions of that nature to the respective department to answer as it sees fit.
